CRB Tech came across a cricket news that Anil Kumble to head the Indian cricket team. The announcement was made by the Board of Control For Cricket In India (BCCI) on Thursday that former India captain Anil Kumble will be the head coach of the Indian cricket team for a period of a year. His first assignment would be India’s four-Test tour of the West Indies.
The other big names for the job were Ravi Shastri, Stuart Law,Tom Moody, Lalchand Rajput, Andy Moles and Pravin Amre.
Indian cricket team deserves the best coach and BCCI has complete faith on Kumble. BCCI president Anurag Thakur tols to a news conference that its not about an Indian or a foreign coach but the best coach for India.
The BCCI gave an advertisement for a new coach in the first week of June and received 57 applications, including Kumble’s. But he was not among the 21 names shortlisted by the office of BCCI secretary Ajay Shirke. The Cricket Advisory Committee, comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, assigned to pick India’s next coach wanted Kumble’s name to be included, and at that point he became an instant favorite.
The committee interviewed Kumble and many other candidates in Kolkata on Tuesday, and on Wednesday, they made their recommendations to the BCCI. Thakur, along with Shirke, made the final decision.
Thakur said at a media briefing in Dharamsala that the CAC recommended a few names to the BCCI and after discussions with various stakeholders, they have taken the final call that for next one year Anil Kumble would be the head coach. He added that rest of the support staff would be appointed after having words with Kumble.
Kumble applying for the job was a surprise to many in the BCCI, as has not coached a cricket team earlier. The BCCI had preferred candidates who had experience as coach, but Kumble’s pedigree as a player and two excels as mentor in the IPL worked in Kumble’s favour.
A senior official privy to the selection process said that Kumble was in “the driver’s seat” to prove his worth. He said that there are 13 Tests at home and then there is the Champions Trophy next year, Kumble is in the driver’s seat. He added that they have given him the keys and he has to now prove himself.
Kumble’s finished as India’s highest wicket-taker in Tests, and the third-highest overall.
After his appointment as Test captain in November 2007, he led India in 14 matches, winning three, drawing six and losing five until his retirement a year later. Among his notable triumphs as captain was the Perth Test in January 2008, which was played after the contentious Sydney Test where, among other issues, India faced allegations of racism from the Australian side.
Kumble is the first Indian to be appointed full-time India coach since Kapil Dev’s resignation in September 2000. Since retirement, Kumble also served in administrative roles . He was elected president of the Karnataka State Cricket Association in November 2010, served as chairman of the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore and also headed the BCCI’s technical committee from 2012 to 2015.CRB Tech WordPress
