Easy And Delicious Calzones

Today at the recipe junction by CRB Tech Reviews I share with you an easy and fast Calzone recipe.

During my days of new motherhood, I was naive at babysitting and was down by postpartum blues. Sometime i didn’t like what the cook made for us. I wanted to try something different; easy and fast. So then I came across the calzones.

Calzones

There are various ways to prepare them; it could be the simple ones and the way the recipe dictates. Well my fav are these.

The recipe for the calzones

Ingredients

16 frozen, dinner rolls
1 tsp butter
1 onion, diced
1 pound breakfast sausage
1/2 tsp Italian seasoning
1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
15 ounces whole milk ricotta
1 1/2 cups mozzarella, grated
1/2 cup grated Parmesan
2 tsps fresh parsley
1/2 tsp salt
Black pepper
3 eggs, beaten
Maida, for dusting
Marinara Sauce

Marinara Sauce:
Olive oil
3 to 4 cloves garlic, minced
1 onion, chopped
1/2 cup white wine or chicken broth
Crushed tomatoes
Salt and pepper
Sugar
Fresh parsley & basil leaves

Methods to follow:

Place the frozen rolls on a baking sheet 2 to 3 hours.

Preheat an oven to 400 degrees F.

Melt the butter in a skillet. Add onions and cook for a few minutes. Add the sausage and cook until caramelised. Add the Italian seasoning and red pepper flakes. Remove from the skillet and cool on a plate.

In another bowl, mix the all types of cheese, salt, some pepper, parsley and 2 eggs.

When the sausage is cool, stir into the cheese mixture and keep aside.

When the rolls are thawed roll them until very thin. Spoon 3 to 4 tsps of the filling onto half of the dough circle. Fold half of the dough over, and then seal the edges by pressing.

Brush the surface of each calzone with beaten egg, and then bake until golden brown, about 15 minutes. Serve with warm Marinara Sauce.

Note: If you want a larger calzone, use frozen bread loaves or pizza crust.

Marinara Sauce:

Add 1 tsp of olive oil into a hot pan and throw in garlic and chopped onions and give them a stir.

Now add the wine or chicken broth. Cook until the liquid reduces to half.

Add crushed tomatoes, salt and pepper and stir to combine. Reduce the heat and allow it to simmer for half an hour.

Finally add the chopped parsley and basil leaves and add it to the sauce to taste. Stir and combine.

Enjoy!
